Surround Sound Technology

One of the easiest words to define is surround sound. It means music or sounds coming from all angles.  While there have been recent major advances in technology, there wasn’t much improvements until recent years. This is especially true when comparing the development of sound technology vs. video technology over the past three decades.

There are numerous various formats on the marketplace today.  Making it very confusing for many consumers. The good news is the technology is automatically interpreted by the digital devices. However, you do need a good AV receiver and speakers to get the maximum enjoyment from your home theater and surround sound system.

Dolby Pro Logic, a system is used to translate or decode the signals from other media such as video tapes of the television age to transfer. It is well known for his ability to make two sounds from the speaker and her terribly realistic surround imitations known.

DTS is the biggest competitor when it comes to Dolby. DTS is the answer to these companies in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. This is mainly seen on DVD.

DTS-ES is the aforementioned company to respond, in Dolby 6.1 surround sound system (or 6 speakers and 1 subwoofer). DTS has of course its own reaction to the Pro Logic and the answer would be, DTS Neo: 6 of which are said to produce imitations of the great 2-channel surround sound a bit like media existing Logic Pro.

You may be wondering why we are talking about all the different technologies. The main reason is, there is a difference in buying equipment and DVDs that are not compatible.  It might cause an undesirable sound. Most systems will usually support both Dolby Digital and DTS, but be sure you understand your system’s requirements when buying stereo equipment.

Like everything in life, choosing an appropriate surround sound system is reduced to a matter of preference. The largest systems can run more speakers (as they are found to be 6.1 or 7.1 surround systems) which offers a high quality sound.  Poor quality speakers can completely ruin the beautiful sound in your audio system. The receiver and speakers should be your biggest investment, if you’re looking to build a dream surround sound theater.
